The market with the largest market participants is the retail market. These are basically hundreds of websites provided by ‘website brokers’ that allow anybody to purchase carbon credits for offset purposes only. These websites do not allow their purchasers to invest in carbon credits for trading purposes, once a purchase is made the carbon offset/retirement certificate will be immediately issued. The retail market participants are mainly individuals and SMEs.
The owner of these websites is mainly small traders that source the carbon credits from carbon credit exchanges/traders at a smaller amount and agents/brokers for the larger traders that receive a commission on each carbon credit sold and retired on their website.
Another category of website brokers is smaller projects who issued carbon credits using their own internally formulated carbon standards.
The minimum transaction size in the retail market is usually 1 tCO2e.
Trading activities on these websites are usually not publicly reported by the website owners.
